Fort Covington Cemetery

Harland R. Horton took the original census of the old cemetery in Ft. Covington in 1967. In 1968, Mrs. Roy Avery of Syracuse re-typed it and made some additions and corrections. However, she missed about 100 names when she re-typed it. Both of the older versions list the graves in order by rows as they are arranged in the cemetery, and not alphabetically. This system works well if someone is actually in the cemetery doing research. However, most genealogists are in a library many miles from the cemetery as they do their research. Therefore, I decided to re-type the entire list in alphabetical order. As it was typed, the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Ft. Covington were consulted to try to fill in some of the missing names and relationships among those buried, especially if they were not buried side by side with other family members.

The one disadvantage to this list was that there was no chance to check the original lists for accuracy, and that means that almost all mistakes in the originals are repeated here. However, this list should be slightly more accurate since questionable names were checked against other records. Because there are many names in the original lists without surnames, it is very probable that some of these people, especially women, are mis-identified.
